Ossie Davis Legacy Award/ United Negro College Fund (UNCF)
Ossie Davis was a film, television and Broadway actor, director, poet, playwright, author, and civil rights activist. To recognize his accomplishments, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has created a scholarship fund in his name to help African American students pay for tuition and other college expenses. To be eligible, students must be already attending or planning to attend an HBCU in the fall.
Applicants must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale system and major in African American Studies, Communications, Humanities, Education, Social Sciences, Theater Arts/Drama, Fine Arts, Science Political Performing Arts, or Visual Arts.
In addition, applicants must submit an essay concerning what they've learned from the activism of Ossie Davis and his peers and connect his work to today's activism; and applicants must upload a letter of recommendation from a college dean or professor along with online application by the application deadline.
If selected applicants will be invited to a semi-final round, that requires the submission of an electronic portfolio of accomplishments and goals. The portfolio may exhibit pictures, drawings or any other evidence that reflects the student's involvement with the arts as activism. A narrative description of the portfolio must also be included.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in OCTOBER each year, and the award amount VARIES.
